Your deals affect more than your wallet. Factions watch your choices, reputation changes what is available, and the game advertises advanced licenses and underground-market access. Do not treat every illicit sale as free money: there is an enforcement and reputation cost to consider.

What the game confirms
The official demo storefront describes faction loyalties, contraband and consequences when dealing with the authorities. The wider game description also mentions advanced licenses and an underground market. Its exact unlock requirements, faction-point thresholds and every merchant schedule are not established by the current sources.
Reputation is a business resource
The station can contain security agents, revolutionaries and upper-level buyers. A long-running Demo session shows the player discussing smuggling orders and reputation, but the observed access of a mature run cannot be assumed for a new save. When a deal might affect faction standing, compare the immediate credit return with the route you are trying to open later.
| Before you agree | Ask yourself |
|---|---|
| Buyer or seller | Who is involved and what faction might notice? |
| Good | Is it flagged stolen, illegal or otherwise risky? |
| Value | Does the net sale justify risk to stock and access? |
| Future | Will this make your preferred future customer or route harder to reach? |
What should a new player do?
Keep enough safe, liquid stock to pay rent, then experiment with riskier channels only after learning the inspection and negotiation systems. Use items and Augs to reduce misidentification mistakes and money and rent to keep your shop solvent.
Choose reputation for access, not just the next sale
Faction reputation has an economic consequence. The September 14 developer patch says the Thief’s available stock now scales with Black Market reputation. That means a reputation change can affect future buying opportunities rather than only a one-time reaction to a deal. The same patch gives the Smuggler Bay’s underground exchange priority over temporary exchange offers. Before accepting a suspicious transaction, check whether the immediate payment compensates for losing access or raising enforcement risk.
| If your goal is… | What to inspect first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stocking ordinary shop goods | The buyer’s actual goods and budget | A good price is useless if the customer cannot pay. |
| Access to underground stock | Current Black Market reputation and the Thief’s stock | Supply can change with reputation in the September demo. |
| Using the Smuggler Bay | Which exchange directive is currently active | The underground exchange takes precedence in the updated build. |
| Avoiding an enforcement spiral | Whether the trade is illegal or suspicious and your current security position | Confiscation can turn an apparently good margin into a loss. |
The game describes the station’s rival interests as part of its shop simulation, but it does not publish a complete threshold chart for all faction unlocks on the Steam store page. Check the current in-game faction panel before committing to a supposed guaranteed unlock route.
